York: a city with culture and history

Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, York has experienced a rich history over 2000 years. Many people consider York as the city which embodies the history and culture of the UK. With a specific ancient atmosphere, York is undoubtedly a tourist destination that nobody should miss out on.

 

York Minster

York Minster, of which the full name is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, is the largest Gothic church of Medieval period in Europe. It has a spectacular facade and the largest expanse of stained glass in the world. If you want to have a panoramic view of York, you can climb up the tower via the 275 stairs to overlook the whole city from 71 meters high.

 

Clifford’s Tower

Clifford’s Tower is the relic of the medieval Norman Castle which was a major fortification with its extended water defenses. You can go up through the spiral steps to enjoy a view of York city. The circular grassed area in front of Clifford’s Tower is now called the ‘Eye of York’.

 

York Castle Museum

Located in front of the ‘Eye of York’, York castle museum is a famous museum in Yorkshire. It was built on the site of prisons and the name is derived from the former York Castle. The museum exhibits a huge collection of items reflecting everyday life in the Middle Ages. It is a favorite of any history buff.

 

York Dungeon

York Dungeon is not the only tourist attraction of dungeon in the UK but you definitely should not miss it. It’s a 75 journey guiding you to over 2000 years of York’s horrible history. An amazing cast of theatrical actors will give you a hilarious experience, though not without some fear!  If you like history and horror, York Dungeon is perfect for you.

 

Shambles

Nobody can afford to miss the Shambles. It is the best-kept medieval street in York. Just exact as its name, there used to be many butchers selling meat. The ‘heyday’ was in 1872, with 26 butchers’. Nowadays, it is more recognised as the film location of ‘Diagon Alley’ in Harry Porter. A number of boutiques on the street will undoubtedly capture your attention.

 

Bettys

As a symbolic site, Bettys is well known all over the UK. There are numerous travelers around the world coming for it. With its exquisite afternoon tea set, you can spend a whole afternoon here and get relaxed. All you need is to take your time and enjoy yourself.
