With a bodega on every street corner and a British counter-culture explosion in Madrid’s trendy areas, you’ll never be short of great places to eat or drink. However, here are some hidden gems well worth checking out:
1. Carmencita Bar
Tucked away in the heart of trendy neighbourhood Malasana, Carmencita Bar offers a range of breakfasts, from the best eggs benedict you’ll ever eat to burgers. The piece de resistance is they have mimosas for 1 Euro.
2. Lamiak Bar
This funky little bar fuses old-school Spain with modern chic. With a large array of vintage jazz posters on the wall and a mouth-watering selection of pinchos (loaded brushettas) you can’t go wrong hanging out with the cool kids in Anton Martin.
3. Taberna El Buo
This place serves the biggest tortilla (Spanish omelette) you’ll ever see. They’re good, but be warned; you will need a siesta after eating just half. Just as well this traditional, yet contemporary restaurant is perfect for chilling out.
4. Le Huelga
It’s easy to miss this tiny bar in the trendy barrios of Lavapies (pronounced laa-va-pee-es). An unassuming doorway opens into a dark and red neon haven of rock and soul. The bar also boasts an enormous collection of Communist propaganda art.
5. Café Manuela
Immerse yourself in the art deco surroundings of Manuela. Enjoy a civilised board game while sipping on an After Eight milkshake or Rioja. This place gets pretty busy so arrive early to secure a seat.
