Thumb sized monkeys are China’s latest wealth symbol

These primates known as, pygmy marmosets, hail from the western amazon in south America where their population is dwindling.

Many of China’s rich want to own the monkeys as a pet to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. However it is reportedly illegal in the People’s Republic of China, not to mention cruel and inhumane.

Someone posted on the Chinese social media site Tudou claiming they’re selling the monkeys. It is unknown how they smuggled them into the country.

The price for one monkey reportedly goes for 30,000 yuan or $4600.

“Buying and selling are certainly not legal,” the Shanghaiist quoted one Chinese official expert as stating. “More than one governmental body is supervising this.”
