Travel Warnings for South Korea as MERS Virus Spreads

Hong Kong and Macau have issued warnings against travelling to South Korea after a seventh person died from the virus.

In Hong Kong the Security Bureau announced a 'red' travel alert which is the second highest, which urges people to avoid non-essential travel to South Korea. Macau also announced a travel alert, and said it would require people entering local healthcare facilities to wear masks as a precaution against MERS.

Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said security and health officials had been in talks with travel agencies to discuss the latest situation in Korea.

“The Security Bureau has agreed that if the issue of public health affects Hong Kong people’s health, [it] can use this travel alert system to issue a clearer message for the [travel] industry to follow,” she said.

In South Korea, more than 2000 people have been quarantined and all confirmed cases of the virus have been traced back to the original patient.
