Between 1994 and 2000, Boyzone became one of the biggest boy bands of the 90’s. In 2000, the band split for a break and one year after their reunion in 2008, Boyzone’s star Stephen Gately was lost, he had an undiagnosed heart condition.
Boyzone’s career gained 6 UK No 1 singles out of 24, with 12 being in the top 2 and they had 9 No 1 singles in the UK and Ireland together and 5 No 1 albums. By 2013, Boyzone had sold 25 million records worldwide. In 2000 the Irish band ended their last tour at the ‘Point Depot in Dublin’. Their reunion began at the ‘O2 Arena’ in London 2008, after selling out their tickets within the first 2 hours of their realise.
After the band split in 2000 the five members, Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Stephen Gately all went their separate ways. Ronan became a solo singer, Keith starred in the long time running soap ‘Coronation Street’ as Ciaran, Shane took up Auto Racing and Stephen went straight to the West End.
Stephen’s first appearance at the West End was the role of Joseph in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream coat’, he then went on to play the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he starred as Dandini in Cinderella on his second appearance and then the Scare Crow in The Wizard of Oz.
Stephen was found dead in his holiday home in Andratx Majorca on the 10th October Spanish time, at the age of 33. Seven years later, Boyzone are just as strong as they always have been and Stephen will always be loved, missed and remembered.
Your life was a blessing, which will be treasured forever.
