Early Tuesday morning an apartment balcony collapsed in Berkely, California killing six of the thirteen people who fell.
Officials announced that three men and three women all in their early twenties died following the accident. Five of those were Irish students.
Officials released the names in a news conference, they were: Olivia Burke, 21; Eimear Walsh, 21; Eoghan Culligan, 21; Niccolai Schuster, 21; and Lorcan Miller, 21. The US citizen was Ashley Donohoe, 22.
Philip Grant, the Consul General of Ireland to the Western United States said “We’re still in an emergency response mode, It’s a formative experience, and to have this happen … has left us all frozen in shock and disbelief”.
The cause of the balcony collapse is still under investigation, but the police have said that as this point there was no indication that anything criminal had happened.
Other balconies in the area have been “red tagged” and the building owner has been ordered to inspect them.
