As San Diego’s 2016 Comic Con is about to touch down this week (20/07/2016), starting with their preview night on Wednesday; I am going to be providing up to date coverage each-day throughout this week, highlighting the event’s, news and the current ongoing of this years 74th annual extravaganza. If you’ve only just heard about this event or never came across it in the past, basically: San Diego’s Comic-Con is a non-profit, educational corporation dedicating to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms; may it be movie news and previews, series exclusive, video games or first-look trailers. In todays coverage, I am going to be highlighting the coolest events to look for at this years Comic-Con, so lets get this underway!
Each year, Comic-Con host a number of exciting events, giving us the low down on all the past, present and future happenings in the fictional world. This year is no different! There are some really cool events to be excited for, giving participators some really interesting news whilst involving them in some really cool events. First off is the Suicide Squad takeover!
At last year’s Comic-Con, Suicide Squad was a big hit, getting fans very excited for this new addition to the DC cinematic universe, yet, with just two weeks away from its release, imagine the carnage it’s going to bring to this years convention. With the squad appearing at the Hall H WB panel on Saturday, there will also be a Hard Rock Hotel takeover, which will include a recreation of the Belle Reve Penitentiary, a Harley Quinn tattoo parlour and a virtual reality experience where you can join the squad in a battle scene from the movie. I don’t know about you but that sounds pretty awesome! I wouldn’t mind getting inked up and striding into a virtual battle with these bunch of heroic individuals… oh did I say heroic, my apologies I mean chaotic!
From one chaotic group to another, The Guardians of the Galaxy shall be orbiting at this years Comic-Con. Fresh from their production wrap, there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 preview with Chris Pratt, James Gunn and several other cast members attending. Expect an inside look and sneak peak of the eagerly anticipated sequel which is expected May 2017 !
Keeping with this cosmic trend, to all cosplayers, the next instalment in the Star Trek franchise will have its exclusive red carpet World Premier at Comic-Con. Star Trek Beyond will premier on Wednesday, July 20, at the Embarcadero Marina Park, which if you didn’t know, makes it the first-ever outdoor IMAX premier event. While this is all exciting, expect special appearances by the film’s cast and crew, and a live concert performed by the San Diego symphony orchestra. Is there anymore you want to fill you galactic needs?
Well how about Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) himself?! Marvel’s Doctor Strange is also getting a Hall H panel and it promises to deliver The Doctor himself in attendance, with the man being featured in a Comic-Con 2016 Marvel poster.
Back on earth, far up in the north, there will be a Game of Thrones Showdown at this years convention, which will beg the question, who will survive the next season of GoT? Judging by past events, not many! Fans will be gifted the opportunity for early clues and answers in the Hall H on Friday, July 22. In addition to this, fans will be given teasers from the executive producers, maybe even a showdown by cast favourites Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Iwain Rheon (Ramsay Bolton) who will be joined by a small army of fellow actors.
Another Brutal bunch who will be attending this years Comic-Con are the Vikings so expect lots of history and horns in San Diego. Vikings makes a return this year with stars Travis Fimmel, Kathryn Winnick, Clive Standen and Alexander Ludwig. If this years Viking Event is anything like last years; where a San Diego Seal Boat was turned into a Vikings Longboat, giving attendees a free ride around the harbour, this will be one not to be missed!
In addition to Suicide Squad, Cara Delevingne will be making an appearance with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a film adapted from the comic series Valerian and Laureline. French director Luc Besson and fellow co-star Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) are also expected to make an appearance.
For those who would rather the world of witchcraft and sorcery rather than superhero’s, the Harry Potter Prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will also be getting a Hall H panel, with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne taking off his invincibility cloak and making an appearance, which is something to get excited for!
And to conclude todays special Comic-Con coverage is with none other then this years must loved superhero thus far. Wonder Woman! Wonder Woman will be at Saturday’s Warner Bros. panel where will get an insight scoop of next year’s long-anticipated Wonder Woman Movie, with Gal Gadot on hand to share some WW news in Hall H.
That concludes todays coverage on Comic-Con, tomorrow I will be looking at all the video game panels and what games to look out for at this years convention. Then on Wednesday is a must read! I’ll be building up all the happenings for preview night; eve of the official 74th Comic-Con launch!
