Reddit will hide ‘vile content’ in new policy

Reddit have announced that it will be more difficult to find “abhorrent” content posted on its site, following its new policy change. While Reddit have not banned outright such material, users will be required to log in in order to view
it.

Some users have argued that Reddit is acting against its free speech principles.  The site has seen a week of controversy after Reddit CEO Ellen Pao removed several of the sites hateful subreddits.  A Change.org petition reaching 200,000 signatures, protesting against her ‘totalitarian’ approach successfully removed the ex-CEO, who was replaced by Steve Huffman.

The majority of Reddit’s content “comes from wonderful, creative, funny, smart, and silly communities,” Huffman said, but added, “There is also a dark side, communities whose purpose is reprehensible, and we don’t have any obligation to support them.
