Thought black and white pandas were the only ones? Well things aren’t always black and white.
Qi Zai is the only known brown and white panda to exist in the world.
The 6 year old bear has relied on being fed by humans at the Wild Panda Training Base in Shaanxi Province’s Foping Nature Reserve, but this winter he was left to fend for himself.
As well as having brown coats, Qinling giant pandas also have smaller, rounder skulls, shorter snouts and less fur.
Usually a panda’s colouring is down to a genetic mutation and the animal’s local diet, however Qi Zai is a genetic mystery.
Eight other brown pandas have been found over the years, but Qi Zai is the last known one to have survived.
