Following derogatory remarks made by Manny Pacquiao likening homosexuals to animals, global sports giant Nike have cancelled their association with the multi weight champion.
We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly oppose discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.
The Philippine icon has since issued a pathetic apology but it is not worth quoting in the article. The damage already done, its clear his true point of view is what was initially said and not his retraction.
The fight of the century: In Pacquiao’s last fight with Floyd Mayweather, it was generally assumed to be a fight of good against evil. However it has since been proven that this was not the case.
He is not the only high profile star to be dropped by Nike, Lance Armstrong was famously dumped by the company in 2012 when allegations linking him to the pandemic doping culture in cycling became impossible for him to deny. Shortly after Nike finished with him he admitted complicity.
The Pacman is currently training in his homeland preparing to meet Tim Bradley for their less than eagerly awaited third fight. It is widely expected to be his last fight, after which he will continue his political career full time. It would seem prudent to assume that with such appalling views his career outside of the ring will not be as successful as the one inside of it.
