New bill allows valuables to be seized from asylum seekers

Denmark’s parliament voted in  favour of a bill which will allow authorities to confiscate valuables from asylum seekers to cover their stay in the country.

The passing of the bill allows the seizure of valuables worth more than 10,000 Kroner (1450.00 USD/ 1018 GBP), CNN reports.

According to the Danish immigration ministry, items that can be confiscated include cash, watches, mobile phones and computers, although items of sentimental value such as wedding and engagement rings, family portraits, awards and medals are exempt.

Denmark saw more than 21,000 migrants arrive in the country in 2015.
