Leaving very little to the imagination, it appears that this season’s trend is the fearless, barely-there dress. Inspired by a fresh-faced Kate Moss back in the 90’s, her sheer, Liza Bruce slip dress sent the fashion world into a frenzy. Fast forward to this decade however and the red carpet is filled with celebrities daring to bare all but with the most glamorous of touches. We see jewels a-plenty, elegant fishtail styles and dazzling accessories.
Under the ‘China’ theme of the recent Met Ball, Kim Kardashian and Beyonce were flaunting the flesh in their jaw dropping jewel-encrusted gowns with an oriental twist. Both ladies caused a stir and left the world questioning whether this fashion is a new type of stripped back elegance that embraces the female form or a typical publicity stunt – think Miley Cyrus but with a touch more subtlety!
However, leader of the pack when it comes to the ‘naked dress’ is most definitely Rihanna. At the CDFA Awards last year, her custom made dress designed by Adam Selman was the talk of the night and is what pushed this trend into full swing this year.
The controversy behind the trend has left celebrity/fashion blog, StyleCaster labelling it as a trend that ‘needs to die’, whereas, other news publications describe the craze as a powerful feminist statement. So is this really a trend to embrace or are we taking fashion one step too far?
