Medical Detection Dogs – Saving The NHS Pounds!

Dogs are widely known as being a man’s best friend, but did you know that they can also save lives? One glance at www.medicaldetectiondogs.org demonstrates that this advancement has affected people with life threatening conditions, their lives have vastly improved thanks to these amazing animals and their talent for spotting a medical crisis situation before an ambulance is needed.

Medical Detection Dogs are a charity who provide a canine pal as either a Medical Alert Assistance Dog or a Cancer Detection Dog and they train these marvellous animals. What’s more, there is a Cancer Detection Team who work alongside the dogs to research the early detection of Cancer. The dogs provide a screening for cancers which are difficult to detect reliably.

They are a triumph for assisting individuals who live with Diabetes, their acute sense of smell means that they can detect minute changes in blood sugar levels and warn their owner of an imminent problem. These furry wonders are also helping people with Addisonian Crisis, severe allergies and Narcolepsy.14

Some people who have been helped by the charity would call an ambulance as part of their daily routine, their new friends are able to detect the problem before 999 is dialled. When you weigh up that calling an ambulance costs the NHS £240 and stepping into A & E costs £111, the NHS are benefiting, too.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is Patron of the charity and actress, Lesley Nicol also champions them. Thankfully, Medical Detection Dogs are becoming a more recognised concern and you’d be barking mad not to take a look at their amazing work!
