Marrying age raised from 14 to 16 in Spain

Spain has raised the marry age from 14 to 16, adding protection for minors and bringing the country in line with its European neighbours. 

The law in Spain previously allowed boys and girls to marry with permission from a judge.

This was one of the lowest minimum ages in the European Union with most set at 16.

Legal age of marriage in Europe

  • 15: Estonia (with court’s consent)
  • 16: Germany, UK, Italy and others
  • 18: France, Belgium, Sweden and others
