The hit US drama series, The Walking Dead, a show portraying life following a zombie apocalypse, became all too real for one man in New Mexico as he savagely beat his friend to death after being convinced that he was turning into a zombie.
Last Thursday morning, Damon Perry, 23, had been watching back to back shows of The Walking Dead on the on-demand Internet streaming media service Netflix, whilst drinking multiple 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor at a relative’s apartment. His friend, Christopher Paquin, 23, was watching the show with him and at one point, tried to “bite him” according to Perry. This incident convinced Perry that his friend was a zombie and he “reacted by brutally beating” Paquin to death.
According to a statement from the police, Perry beat his friend to death using his bare hands and feet before repeatedly bludgeoning him with an electric guitar, kitchen knives and a microwave.
Once the victim had been killed, Perry left the apartment and went on a violent rampage, chasing and terrorizing the neighbors; he chasing one woman with a knife and forced her to barricade herself into her apartment.
When police were called to the scene at about 1p.m on Thursday afternoon, they discovered that two maintenance workers had taken it upon themselves to restrain Perry in his relative’s apartment doorway. Police then entered the apartment and discovered the brutal scene of Paquin’s murder. “In my 13 years of doing this, that was the most brutal scene that I have ever seen,” Grants Police Sgt. Moses Marquez said.
Police have said that Perry has a history of alcohol-related run-ins with the law and has served time due to his aggression towards the police in the past. Grants Police spokesman Moses Marquez say assault charges are to be expected in addition to the murder charge. Naomi Ronquillo, a clerk at the county’s magistrate court has told reporters that Perry does not yet have a lawyer.
