Senior Hamas officials announced on Monday that Iran has stopped sending financial aid to Hamas.
According to Western officials, Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard has given millions of dollars to the Palestinian group’s military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam brigades, within the last year to finance Gaza’s tunnel network and rocket caches used during the conflict with Israel last year.
There has been a cooling in the relationship for the past few years. In the beginning of the Syrian civil war Hamas supported the rebel fighters while the Iranian government supported the Assad regime.
The reduction in funding comes after leaders from Hamas, a Sunni group, traveled to Saudi Arabia to build relations with the Sunni Muslim state. It is thought that the funding was stopped in retaliation to this move.
