How to do Halloween in 2015

Halloween and dressing up go hand in hand. On the 31st October you can’t walk into town without seeing a plethora of witches, ghosts and other spooky creatures.

Sure, Halloween is about being scary, but it’s also a time to express your creativity. Take it as an opportunity to come up with a costume that is original and relevant to popular culture. Here’s 5 ways to dress on Halloween; 2015 style

Orange is the New Black

This prison-based TV show has been all the rage this year; the third season being released in June of this year. Take your halloween fashion queues from the inmates. Think orange boiler suits, black slip on shoes and fake tattoos. Looking like you just stepped out of Litchfield Penitentiary is so in this year.

American Horror Story

Taking cues from another popular TV show, take inspiration from American Horror Story for a more typical Halloween outfit. Copy the style of the asylum nun’s from season two, with black and white face paint, or channel Tate from season one with an all black outfit and skull face paint. Copying AMH is a great way to keep in the halloween theme in an up-to-date kind of way.

James Bond

This year, Halloween is in the same week as another important event; the release of Daniel Craig’s final Bond film, Spectre. Suit up, bow tie and tux included, and represent one the biggest cultural phenomenons of our time. Alternatively, throw it back and take cues from Bond villains, for example, the infamous Blofeld and his creepy cat. With the film coming out this week, a Bond costume couldn’t be more relevant.

Gold/Blue dress

Is the dress gold or blue? Take the question that was on everyone’s minds in February of this year as inspiration for your up-to-date Halloween outfit. This one requires a little more forethought, but make a dress that is half gold and half blue to represent ‘dress gate’. On the other hand, you could wear a dress of either colour and tell people it’s the opposite; after February no one will dare to disagree.

Kim and Kanye

Love them or hate them, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are two important celebrity icons of our time. Not a day goes past without seeing their faces on some kind of media outlet, so embrace the celeb worship and copy Kim and Kanye as a 2 person costume. Baggy neutral tones and a chain necklace are a good start for Kanye, and Kim is the opposite: think tight clothes and a fierce contour. Remember, Kim never goes anywhere not looking her best.
