Spencer Stone, one of the heroic Americans who overpowered an armed gunman on a French train has been ruthlessly stabbed in the chest.
Stone, who is a US airman, is said to currently be in a stable condition after being attacked and stabbed four times. The stabbing took place at 12.45 (local time) Thursday, on a street that is located near a number of busy bars in Sacramento, California.
Air Force Times have confirmed that Stone was stabbed four times. Police have further confirmed this, stating that alcohol was most likely a contributing factor, and that the incident is not believed to be related to terrorism.
Following the stabbing, officers sealed off a two-block area surrounding the scene. A man and a woman have been interviewed in connection with the stabbing but currently no arrests have been made.
Some reports have suggested that Mr Stone was attacked whilst protecting a friend.
In a public statement a police spokesman said “It is believed that the victim was out with a group of friends when a physical altercation led to the victim being stabbed multiple times in his upper body.
“Detectives were called to the scene to assist with the investigation and the victim is currently being treated for what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.”
According to KRCA the severities of the injuries led to the assumption that Mr Stone would not survive, and police subsequently launched a homicide investigation.
Stone was deemed a hero when he along with his friends Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos apprehended and subdued an armed gunman on a train that was bound for Paris.
Stone was left wounded after the incident where he was sliced in the hand and stabbed in the neck with bolt cutters. At the time he said of the incident “He seemed like he was ready to fight to the end. So were we.”
Mr Stone had to have his thumb reattached following the struggle, but even whilst injured he managed to help a fellow injured passenger who was bleeding profusely.
The three heroes and Briton Chris Norman were awarded the Legion d’Honneur – France’s highest honour – for bravery.
Fellow hero Skarlatos took to twitter after Stone’s stabbing to wish him well “Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today.”
It has recently emerged that Skarlatos attends Umpqua Community College. The same college where a gunman killed nine people. The 22-year-old was competing on the US show Dancing with the Stars at the time, had he not been at the show he would have been in classes when the shooting took place last week.
