Heartbeat – From Screen to Stage

Heartbeat was a successful sixties-based ‘cop show’ which was broadcast on ITV between 1992 and 2010 and ran for 18 series in total. However, it seems that we haven’t seen the back of Aidensfield and some of the well-loved characters as they commence a UK tour of a variety of theatres.

Arriving in Birmingham at the New Alexandra Theatre this week and finishing on 2nd July 2016 in Glasgow, the show has already taken in Blackpool and High Wycombe this year. David Lonsdale (who played David in the television series) and Steven Blakeley (who played PC Geoff Younger) reprise their roles and they are joined by David Horne, Carly Cook and Matt Milburn.

Whether the show works on stage without the real Yorkshire countryside and a limited opportunity to change location. However, reviews from the venues the show has visited so far have been positive.

With Bad Girls, Allo Allo and Hi De Hi among some of the popular programmes that have made the transition fro screen to stage, successfully in some cases – it begs the question as to whether this is a new trend. Is this the future of theatre? Watch this space would be my theory.
