It’s “Goodnight Camper” to actor Barry Howard who has passed away at the age of 78. His agent has been reported as announcing that the star was suffering from Blood Cancer.
Howard was a popular performer, know for his role as Barry Stuart-Hargreaves from series 1-7 of hit BBC comedy series Hi De Hi! Together with the late Diane Holland, he formed an unforgettable duo as Barry and Yvonne, ballroom dancers and instructors at Maplin’s Holiday Camp.
Barry Howard was not his birth name, he was originally Bert Pratt and born in Nottingham on 9th July 1937.
A seasoned thespian as well as a well known star of the small screen, I personally remember his performance as The Major General in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. The musical number ‘I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General’ is not an easy undertaking, and his rendition was perfect. He also reprised his role of Barry for the stage version of Hi De Hi! Proving what a second skin that character had become for him.
Tributes are pouring in, Hi De Hi! co-star Jeffrey Holland has posted a passage on his Facebook page “Rest now Barry and give our love to all the others over there in Maplin’s Heaven” says Holland.
I like to hope that he and Diane are reunited and dancing again as Barry and Yvonne. RIP Barry Howard.
