Gatwick’s North Terminal Evacuated After Suspicious Package Found

The North Terminal of Gatwick Airport has been evacuated after a suspicious item was found.

A man thought to be responsible for discarding the item is being help and Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams are on the scene.

“At this time, we are investigating the circumstances of the incident and it is too early to say what the item may be. However, given the events in Paris on Friday evening, there is heightened awareness around any such incident and it is best that we treat the matter in all seriousness” Detective Superintendent Nick May said.

The roads immediately surrounding the terminal have been closed and passengers are being asked to give themselves plenty of extra time getting to the airport.

Travellers have been tweeting and posting pictures from the scene. Tim Unwin, for instance, a geography professor at the University of London, writes that he and many others have been moved to Sofitel London Gatwick Airport hotel.

From what Professor Unwin reports it will be at least another hour before they are
released.
