An unstoppable flow of water falls from the arching 50 meter precipice into the Niagara river with a deafening and thundering force. Vast icy mist clouds swirl for hundreds of metres in the air like an ethereal veil, concealing the epic rift behind the powerful torrent. Two friends of mine waved their hands in front of my eyes. To them I stood motionless, paralysed from foot to toe – in my mind an opera of emotions exploded sending shivers down the great plains of my spine. I broke out of my trance, stumbled over and whispered to a Canadian friend, ‘is this real?’
Thousands of people make the pilgrimage to one of the most powerful network of waterfalls in the world, hypnotised by its epic grandeur and turbulent beauty – day or night, Niagara falls never fails to amaze. With over 12-million annual visitors, there’s no doubt that these falls should be sitting at the top of your travel bucket list. The town, whilst attractive in parts is not as impressive. Tacky and cheap amusement attractions, sleazy motels and overpriced restaurants – a little Vegas you might think but not nowhere near as exciting so just best to shoot though here and avoid the casinos and tourist traps. With the town a no go, here are the 5 things you must do on a trip to Niagara Falls.
See the Falls from the Canadian Side
Sorry America but your side of the iconic falls just doesn’t match your Canadian neighbours – just look at this view.
Whilst most might be familiar with the Maid of the Mist, the Canadian Hornblower cruise is just as good. Take the boat to get up close and personal with the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls.
Journey Behind The Falls
Perfect for all the family, this awesome adventure takes you right into the annals of Niagara falls. Little tunnels lead you underneath the powerful expanse of the Horseshoe Falls where you can get an incredible 360 degree panorama of one of Mother Natures’ most impressive sights.
After an adventurous morning exploring these hypnotic waterfalls you’ll probably be a little ravenous. With delicious food and a mind-blowing view over the falls there is no reason not to go up here and marvel at the spectacular panoramic view. If you are feeling really adventurous, skip lunch and the tower and jump on a helicopter for heart stopping views.
See the Falls at Night
After a long day exploring, rush back to the Niagara Parkway and just let the light show on the falls mesmerise you to heaven and back. The picture says it all.
