An Instagram account named abdoudiouf1993 which appeared to be owned by a migrant trying to get from Senegal to Europe gained thousands of followers and even media attention.
The account which follows the fictional ‘Abdou Diouf’ from Dakar starts with a selfie with a smiling woman. “Today i start a new dream. Today i start my travel to Europe for a better future for my family. I will be telling all my tryp [sic] here. The good and bad moments. Hope yo [sic] like it.”
Diouf has a haircut and his final meal with his mother. He says his is “ready for everything” and “prepared for the new experiences.”
A later image shows Diouf trying to row across the sea in an inflatable boat. Many did not like the photos telling Diouf that he was not welcome and that he was breaking the law.
However many weren’t convinced as a quick Facebook search for ‘Abdou Diouf’ reveals it to be one of the most common names in Senegal.
The account has since been revealed as a hoax by a photography blog called Disphotic.
The man in the pictures is a Spanish citizen called Hagi Toure, with all the images being shot within a few miles of the city by Tomas Pena.
