Atena Farghandani, an Iranain cartoonist who is currently serving a 12 year prison sentence for her work, could be facing an even longer prison sentence because she shook hands with her lawyer.
According to Amnesty International, Atena was arrested and tried because she depicted Iranian officials as goats and monkeys in a satirical cartoon.
After her trial (which lasted just half a day), her lawyer visited her and shook her hand. The gesture has been interpreted as a ‘illegitimate sexual relationship short of adultery’ and ‘indecent conduct’ charges are being brought against both Atena and her lawyer, Mohammad Moghimi.
Amnesty say that Atena is a prisoner of conscience, who’s only real crime is using her freedom of expression. Now she faces even longer in prison for a simple handshake.
