In 2015, it was announced that season six of Downton Abbey would be the show’s swan-song. Going out on a high isn’t always guaranteed, especially in the ever-changing world of television, where the next best thing is always waiting in the wings, meaning before long the words “Downton who?” begin to circulate.
However, scoring a hat trick of SAG awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series has surely gone some way towards ensuring the life and times of the Crawley family keeps a place in television history. Of course, in addition to the tower of trophies the series has to its name, there’s the small matter that Downton Abbey has been taken to the hearts of viewers in over two hundred countries.
Lesly Nicol who plays Mrs Patmore gave a heart-felt, emotional speech on behalf of the ensemble, her words clearly reflecting the feelings of her cast-mates who still appear incredibly humbled after six seasons of success. Cast members present included Phyllis Logan (Mrs Hughes), Joanne Froggatt (Anna), Kevin Doyle (Mr Molesley) and Raquel Cassidy (Miss Baxter), it was mostly the downstairs characters who were out in force for the occasion. Their outfits and appearance, a far cry from the attire of their aliases!
With another National Television Award for Best Drama also under their belts this year, it seems that although no further filming is in the pipeline (unless the much rumoured movie materialises), Downton Abbey continues to reap much deserved accolades.
