In a bizarre twist of events the World Boxing Council (WBC) has taken the unusual step of stripping Miguel Cotto of his middleweight title, 4 days before he was scheduled to defend it against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
“The WBC hereby announces that effective immediately has withdrawn recognition of Miguel Cotto as WBC world middleweight champion… The WBC’s decision is premised on the fact that Miguel Cotto and his camp are not willing to abide by the governing WBC Rules and Regulations and the specific conditions the WBC established to sanction the fight”
To add to the intrigue the WBC have also stated that should Canelo win on Saturday he will be crowned champion. Although the indication is that a refusal from the Cotto camp to pay the championship sanctioning fees could be responsible for the decision to remove him of the title it still seems very strange to do this now.
Why do it just 4 days before one of the biggest fights in the world? It is probably worth remembering the WBC is a Mexican organisation and Canelo is Mexico’s rising star at present. So was this a tactic to disrupt the Puerta Rican Cotto’s preparation? Whether deliberate or not it almost certainly will have
