8 people, including 2 children, have died and 4 have been left in critical condition following a fire in an apartment building in Paris.
The Fire Brigade was called to the scene at 2:20 am in Paris as the blaze ripped through the apartment building in the 18th district of the French capital. The fire is said to have started on the ground floor, and then spread to the stairwell, trapping the residents inside.
The fire damaged 15 more buildings around the area at the base of Montmatre, according to the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. The blaze took over 100 fire fighters and 3 hours to put out.
Investigations have begun into the cause of the fire, as it is believed to have been set on purpose. These allegations have come to light after it was revealed that two more fires were set that night; one at 2 am in the same address, which was put out, and another at 4:30 am.
Talking to La Parisiene, fire fighter Gabriel Plus confirmed the investigation rumours, saying that a “malicious act” could not be ruled out.
Local residents gathered round the scene of the blaze, with many people tweeting and filming the fire coming up through the roof of the building.
