Because the concrete of NYC can get oh so boring sometimes…
Awesome sunsets, state parks and a pretty amazing lighthouse make up this wilderness of wild contrasts. Catch some waves in the spot Jagger and Warhol escaped New York to in the 1970s and experience the hipper alternative to the neighbouring Hamptons. Surf, sand and sun, Montauk is a vibrant town, filled with colour and is the perfect place to shake off those ‘mind’ cobwebs. For a beer, chill in the Montauket, to avoid the crowds head to Gin Beach on Block Island and for the town’s best eat, look no further than Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Cafe. Here, its hip and cool to explore alone.
If you are visiting the big smoke for the weekend or for a holiday you might just want to escape the mania of Manhattan and head to Nassau County’s self-proclaimed ‘City by the Sea’. Mandatory beach passes means that Long Beach never gets too crowded and there are plenty of friendly vendors ready to rent out the essentials. Get those calves working overtime on the two-plus mile boardwalk or simply grab a chair, people watch and enjoy the sun set over the Atlantic. Tourist? No worries. The beach is just across from the LIRR station so you won’t get lost. Result!
Old Westbury Gardens
Grab your high heels, tuxes and bow ties as you are about to be transported back to the roaring 1920s. Come smell the roses, daffs, poppies and irises all the way through to October – who knows you might meet your very own Gatsby or Daisy Buchanan along the way. Find it on 71 Old Westbury Road, Old Westbury.
Vineyards, out of this world colonial houses, quintessential American mansions, designer boutiques and a delicious culinary scene make the Hamptons one of the most coveted spots in the North East. Home to a celeb or two, here you can truly experience the glitz and glam of suburban island life as you gawp and dream of your future home in East Hampton – we’ve all done it… sigh. Long Island Iced Tea please.
