Bulgaria is still a bit of a secret to travellers which is why it makes for a great destination to escape from the usual tourist trails and seek out something different from your travels. Not only are there great reasons to visit Bulgaria but you’ll get fantastic value for your money when exploring the country whatever the type of holiday you’re looking for.

1. Hit the Beaches

If you decide to travel to the Black Sea Coast, you’ll be able to take your pick from commercial resorts, rugged cliffs or wild and sandy beaches which all stretch to nearly 400 kilometres.

2. Chill in a Spa

Bulgaria boasts over 300 thermal and mineral baths and is the ideal destination to come and enhance your well-being with cleansing and beautification. The coast is renowned for thermal and mud treatments whilst mineral baths are very populated the Bankso region.

Whether you choose to eat in a restaurant or from one of the many street bakery kiosks there’ll be a diverse selection to choose from. Part of a Bulgarian’s staple diet consists of their famous banitsas, soups, salads, stews or grilled meats which are only a small selection from their varied culinary temptations.

4. Go on a Free City Tour

Pretty much all the major cities – Sofia, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv – offer free walking tours guided around by local Bulgarians who are very knowledgeable about their cities and can provide valuable information to help spend your time in Bulgaria.

5. Check Out the Architecture

You can visit many of Bulgaria’s UNESCO sites for free although if you want to go inside museums or fortresses, you’ll have to pay a small entrance fee but otherwise the likes of Rila Monastery or Belogradchik Rocks are without charge. If that isn’t enough to entice you, Bulgaria has a wealth of Thracian tombs and burial grounds not to mention over a hundred monasteries and even more churches.
