One of the wonderful things about music is its inherent ability to change our emotions from the core. A melody with a few minor chords and delicate piano keys definitely makes tears well-up in my eyes! Listening to classical piano music can be such a calming and enjoyable experience- obviously not for everyone. Then there’s contemporary piano melodies or what some would call ‘New Age Music’. It might not always be as complicated as those irreplaceable classical hits- thanks, Debussy, Chopin, Mozart and Beethoven, just to name a few- but there sure are some stunning contemporary pieces that your ears need to hear right now.
It’s Your Day by Yiruma
Yiruma’s It’s Your Day is so beautifully composed and performed. It has a positive and i-might-cry-my eyes-out vibe at the same time. It’s definitely my favourite piece by Yiruma. Warning: you might need a box of tissues.
I Giorni (The Days) by Ludovico Einaudi
For animal lovers who happen to love piano music, this song is for you. Composed in a pop style, I Giorni was released in 2002 and it was inspired by 12-century piece about the killing of a Hippo. This piece is simple yet it has a magical way of bringing emotions to the surface. What a gorgeous piano piece!
Far and Away by Philip Wesley
Have a nice bubble bath and watch your worries go Far and Away. Wesley’s composition is so easy to listen to and it has a dream-like quality.
Comptine d’Un Autre Été (Nursery Rhyme of Another Summer: The Afternoon) -Yann Tiersen
You’ve probably heard about this from the French movie Amelie. Tiersen’s piano piece is memorable, especially the treble clef. Imagine listening to this with a warm drink in your hands!
Notte ad Harlem by Giovanni Allevi
I love how Allevi uses a bluesy and classical style. Also…. there’s a key change. Who doesn’t love a good key change every now and then?
