It’s that time of year again when people are looking to shed pounds or just shape up in Summer. When you’re busy with studies, work and other commitments it can be hard to find anytime to dedicate to a gym routine. So, here are 10 tips I’d like to share with you to help you along in conjunction with your exercise regime.
1. Drink Peppermint Tea
So, peppermint tea, it won’t immediately shed the pounds but it’s definitely a great aid in doing so. Peppermint tea benefits the digestive system so when you’ve eaten a huge takeaway, drink some tea afterwards to prevent and relieve bloating and keep your bowel feeling healthy. Research into the effects of peppermint has shown that it can also act as a natural appetite suppressant, not that you should be skipping meals but it will help keep you away from regular unnecessary snacking when you’re craving that leftover Easter chocolate. As well as this, peppermint tea should help you calm down and distress after a long day so it’s not only beneficial to your health goals.
2. Drink Lemon Water
This is one of my personal favourites. Adding a few slices of lemon to your water can act as a fat burner and by aiding your digestive system thus aids you in losing weight. Similarly to the tea, lemon water can also act to prevent bloating and keeps your metabolism awake and buzzing at times when you may not be eating much. Also if you keep swigging this when you’re not eating then it will effectively keep you feeling full for longer, again solving the ‘snacking’ issue. As well as this, lemon water is a natural and lower calorie alternative to sweet and carbonated drinks and by cutting calories you are effectively aiding your weight loss goals.
3. Cut Portions
So this one’s really easy. Cut the sizes of your meal portions and eat more often. This is a more effective and less regressive method of snacking. You won’t be eating more than usual just simply breaking your portions to a more manageable size and helping out your digestive system so it can work much more efficiently as it hasn’t been loaded with a monster of a meal to break up but lots of mini meals, which inevitably keeps your metabolism ‘whirring’ throughout the day.
4. Cut Sugar
Well this one’s super obvious right? You can’t refute the fact it’s hard though. This requires a ton of self-restraint and saying no to the donuts, chocolates and ice cream niggling at your ear. Saying no to all your favourite sweet snacks, fizzy drinks and dessert at your favourite restaurant may feel like the hardest thing in the world at the time, but TRUST me, it is so worth it. Not only are you cutting out one of the biggest causes of the food baby you’ve accidentally gained but also cutting your calories. It’s a win-win.
5. Home Exercising
Setting aside time to go to the gym around your lifestyle can be a huge inconvenience. Exercising at home with sit-ups, crunches and the like can give you the bouts of exercise that you really need and all you need is an empty space of floor at home. A little exercise is better than none at all.
6. Cut Fast Food
Again like sugar, this one is pretty tough. I find the hardest thing is saying no to takeout when you’re with friends. If you can’t manage cutting out fast food then set yourself a ‘cheat day’ once a week where you can indulge in your favourite unhealthy food and snacks(in moderation of course!). Just by doing this your normal calorie intake is cut and thus the amount of fat you’re eating.
7. Cut Alcohol
So most of us know the beer belly all too well. If you’re a regular alcohol drinker then the alcohol is probably making up around 1/10th of those unwanted calories. It may not seem like a lot but that’s maybe like a forearm worth of extra fat! Alcohol also makes the fat-burning process much slower so you will lose a lot more weight much quicker if you cut alcohol from your diet.
8. Eat Breakfast
I used to get the ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ phrase thrown at me from all around growing up and still do. I thought it was complete rubbish up until last year though. As I’ve mentioned before keeping your metabolism at work is so important to aid the weight loss purpose. Eating a small breakfast in the morning can wake up your metabolism so when you eventually eat your lunch your metabolism is already awake and ready. Skipping meals seems like a great idea when you want to lose weight but health is just as important as weight to keep you doing all the things you do.
9. Cook More
So since you’re saying no to fast food why not replicate your favourite dishes at home. I’m not saying you have to eat salads all the time if you don’t want to, but cooking say your own homemade KFC at home would be so much healthier than the real thing. You can make all your favourite burgers and dishes at home and not have to pay with it by having to raise an unwanted food baby. There are so many recipes out there, don your apron and get cooking!
10. Drink More Water
So apart from the obvious fact that water helps you get rid of food and liquid, water also helps you feel fuller. Swap your coke for a big glass of water and you’ll appreciate the food you’re eating more without having the extra gas and bloating you get with carbonated drinks. It’s another tip that will increase the speed of your metabolism and come on, you can’t really complain about a faster metabolism when you want to burn calories. Finally whilst water might seem pretty mundane and boring, don’t forget you can spruce it up with fruits, veg, mint and all sorts, so go and get creative!
So here are the top 10 tips to use to lose weight easily, efficiently and tailor it to your lifestyle. Cutting things doesn’t have to mean a return to the bog standard and boring, just get creative and find what works for you!
